Average user carries 2.9 devices – Sophos

A new Sophos survey has found that the average technology user carries 2.9 devices.

The vendor’s Naked Security site conducted a survey of more than 2,200 users worldwide, asking readers how many devices they carry, and which operating systems they use.

The results were mocked up into an infographic, shown below.

In terms of the highlights, the largest number of devices carried by a respondent was 12, the smartphone was by far the most popular device carried by respondents, and Android was the most popular operating system.

Of the 2,226 respondents, the majority of whom came from Australia, Canada, Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom, residents of Germany carried the most devices, posting an average of 3.1.

The U.S. followed closely behind Germany, showing an average 3.0 devices per person. Next up was Canada and the U.K., which both saw an average of 2.7 devices per person. Australia’s users were the least weighed down by devices, showing an average of 2.6.

The survey also found that Germans were more likely to carry laptops, while Americans, Australians, Britons and Canadians were most likely to carry smartphones.

That said, overall, 85 percent of all respondents said they carry a smartphone. Meanwhile, 68 percent said they carry a laptop, and 48 percent said they carry a tablet. MP3 players fared better than e-readers, being carried by 40 percent of respondents against the e-readers’ 29 percent.

In terms of smartphone operating systems, Sophos found that 40.9 percent of users favoured Android devices, which narrowly beat the 40.5 percent who opted for Apple’s iPhone. BlackBerry, meanwhile, was carried by just 8.9 percent of respondents, and Windows Phone did even worse, making up just 3.4 percent of the share.
