EMC Corporation has announced new initiatives and products to enable the company’s worldwide network of channel partners to accelerate their customers’ journey to cloud computing. Together with the EMC VSPEX Proven Infrastructure announced in April 2012, and the new VMAX Service Provider (SP) platform, announced last week, the new EMC Cloud Builder and Cloud Provider Practices, EMC Cooperative Services, and the new VNXe3150 unified storage platform provide EMC partners with the industry’s most comprehensive and flexible cloud-enabling capability.

These announcements are a continuation of EMC’s journey to the cloud. In 2011, EMC announced the Velocity Service Provider program to jointly develop solutions and services with targeted, established service providers. Those partners who successfully complete the Cloud Provider designation requirements will be included in the Velocity Service Provider Program. Today, there are more than 160 EMC-powered services being delivered by over 50 EMC Velocity Service providers around the world.

At EMC’s first annual Global Partner Summit (GPS) at EMC World in Las Vegas this week, Joe Tucci, EMC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, and EMC sales and channel leaders, presented to more than 3,000 partners these new programs and technologies, as well as other initiatives that enable EMC channel partners to transform IT, business and themselves in order to maximize their customers’ cloud computing opportunities.

The new practices announced include the EMC Velocity Solution Provider Practices – A new branded designation within the Velocity Solution Provider Program that recognizes advanced levels of capability. Achievement of a Velocity Practice signifies a partner’s value in delivering leading-edge solutions. It recognises high-value skills in pre-sales, sales and services, across a broad set of technology solutions needed to address customers’ strategic business initiatives.

The Cloud Builder Practice enables partners to successfully design, build and manage cloud infrastructures based on EMC technology. The Cloud Provider Practice enables Velocity Solution Provider partners with advanced capabilities to design, build and operate their own branded IT-as-a-Service cloud offerings based on EMC technology. The Cloud Builder Practice will be available starting in Q3 2012 and the Cloud Provider Practice will be available in Q4 2012. VMAX SP general availability is expected in 2013.

“Cloud computing represents a huge market opportunity for EMC’s partners. Our new Velocity Cloud Practices enable and support them in developing the expertise required to accelerate their clients’ journey to the cloud. Today’s announcement is another example of EMC’s commitment to advancing our partners’ skill set, sales opportunities, and differentiation in the market. We are 100% focused on delivering our Velocity partners the best technology and the most comprehensive and rewarding partner program in the industry,” said Gregg Ambulos, senior VP of global channel sales at EMC Corporation.

EMC also announced EMC Cooperative Services – a new service delivery model that gives partners an exclusive opportunity to supplement their existing skills and investments and broaden their portfolio of services. Available to service-enabled resellers who are part of the Velocity Solution Provider program and have achieved Velocity Specialty status. In this unique delivery mode, EMC Global Services provides service components to the partner to incorporate into a larger customer deliverable using proven EMC methodologies, best practices and analytical tools. Partners own the customer relationship and service engagement and can choose to brand the overall service as their own, further strengthening their role as trusted technology partners to their customers.

EMC Cooperative Services provides partners with greater choice and flexibility in high-value service delivery and are intended to drive profitable, strategic growth while reducing partners’ investment to scale capabilities. EMC Cooperative Services for health-checks and assessments on major EMC technology platforms will be available by the end of EMC’s second quarter. Additional EMC Cooperative Services for virtual infrastructure will be available in the second half of 2012.

CPI Technology’s Senior Editor Sathya Mithra Ashok will be reporting live from the event floor through all days of EMC World 2012. Keep reading www.cnmeonline.com for updates.

When you stage a conference in Las Vegas, there is always the risk that the attendees succumb to the evil lure of temptation that ‘Sin City’ offers them.

After visiting the crazy place a couple of years ago with friends, I couldn’t get my head around why it was such a popular destination for conventions.

So when I was invited to report from Interop Las Vegas 2012, it was time for me to see just how practical working in the entertainment capital of the world is.

One thing’s for sure – they don’t make it easy for you. To even get to the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, where the conference was held all week, I had to walk through the hotel’s massive casino.

Now I’m not big into casinos, but as the week went on – and my head was consumed more at more with talk of data centres, switches, networking and infrastructure – there’s something about the lights and sounds of Vegas that after a while begin to speak to you.

It doesn’t help that the old tricks of having no windows and – if you believe what they tell you – pumping extra oxygen in to keep people awake, lead you to eventually start believing you’re in some weird alternative world.

Add to that the fact that Mandalay Bay possesses what was voted the best swimming pool in Las Vegas, which you also conveniently have to walk past everyday to get to the conference, and that lure of temptation is complete.

With that in mind, it was to no surprise that a stand-out story of the week came from a gaming company. Only this was not a traditional Vegas-esque gaming firm, it was the social online gaming giant Zynga – otherwise known as the creators of FarmVille, CityVille and Words With Friends.

In the early days of Zynga, infrastructure was not an issue, said Allan Leinwand, CTO of infrastructure at the company. However, when FarmVille grew to 10 million day active players just six weeks after its launch in 2009, Zynga could not scale its infrastructure to meet the overwhelming demand. Fortunately, the public cloud was at hand for Zynga to leverage and prevent it from imploding.

Operating on the public cloud was easy for Zynga, and it served as a nice base to launch more games, including CityVille, which at the time was the fastest growing game on Facebook and as of February 2012 had over 46 million monthly active users.

However, at the end of 2012 Zynga decided it was time to do something very familiar to Vegas – roll the dice.

“We realised that we were renting what we could own. We wanted to own the base of our infrastructure. That base of our infrastructure would be the hidden gem and core component of our infrastructure plans,” Leinwand said.

So Zynga decided to build its own private cloud. Calling it the zCloud, Zynga built everything from scratch, including a new data centre, network, orchestration layer and servers. It then built it in multiple geographies, interconnected it with fibre, connected it up to its social network partners and then integrated all the workloads from the public cloud to its new private one.

In November 2011 Zynga launched CastleVille fully on zCloud and it became the fastest growing game in Zynga’s history, growing to five million day active players in just six days.

By launching it on the zCloud it saw a massive decline in data workload costs from the reduction of servers required compared to the public cloud.

After hearing this story I was convinced of two things. Firstly, Zynga’s gaming and cloud success shows that the digital and social world of today even makes Las Vegas look old fashioned.

And secondly, I can finally agree that technology conferences and Las Vegas do indeed go together – as proven by my ability to write this blog whilst lying on a sun lounger at the Mandalay Bay swimming pool.

IT is accepting, and in some cases embracing, bring-your-own-device (BYOD) as a reality in the enterprise, according to findings in a Cisco study released yesterday.

Cisco said the findings of its IBSG Horizons Study of IT “underscore that BYOD is here to stay, and managers are now acknowledging the need for a more holistic approach – one that is scalable and addresses mobility, security, virtualisation and network policy management, in order to keep management costs in line while simultaneously providing optimal experiences where savings can be realised.”

The study also shows some of the quantifiable benefits and complexities associated with allowing employees to use their own mobile devices on their employers’ networks, the company added.

The study found most organisations are now enabling BYOD in the enterprise, with 95% of respondents saying their organisations permit employee-owned devices in some way, shape or form in the workplace.

It also concluded that the average number of connected devices per knowledge worker is expected to reach 3.3 by 2014, up from an average of 2.8 in 2012. IT managers are balancing security and support concerns with the very real potential to reap significant cost and productivity benefits from the BYOD trend.

What’s more, the survey found that BYOD is just the gateway to greater business benefits. Over 76% of IT leaders surveyed categorised BYOD as somewhat or extremely positive for their companies, while seeing significant challenges for IT.

Key BYOD findings:

95% of organisations allow employee-owned devices in some way, shape or form in the workplace.

84% of respondents not only allow employee-owned devices, but also provide some level of support.

36% of surveyed enterprises provide full support for employee-owned devices. In other words, they will provide support for any device (smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.) the employee brings to the workplace.

Mobility and device use are on the rise: 78% of U.S. white-collar employees use a mobile device for work purposes, and 65% of white-collar workers require mobile connectivity to do their jobs. By 2014, the average number of connected devices per knowledge worker will reach 3.3, up from an average of 2.8 in 2012.

On average, mobility initiatives will consume 20% of IT budgets in 2014, compared to 17% in 2012.

Most IT leaders (76%) consider consumerisation “somewhat” or “extremely” positive for their companies.

Among respondents, the top two perceived benefits of BYOD were improved employee productivity (more opportunities to collaborate) and greater job satisfaction.

Employees want to work their way: Employees are turning to BYOD because they want more control of their work experience:Benefits of BYOD add up: The benefits of BYOD vary based on an employee’s role and work requirements. Cisco IBSG estimates that in the US for example, the annual benefits from BYOD range from $300 to $1,300 per employee, depending on the employee’s job role.

40% of respondents cited “device choice” as employees’ top BYOD priority (the ability to use their favorite device anywhere).

Employees’ second BYOD priority is the desire to perform personal activities at work, and work activities during personal time.

Employees also want to bring their own applications to work: 69% of respondents said that unapproved applications — especially social networks, cloud-based email, and instant messaging — are somewhat to much more prevalent today than two years ago.

Employees are willing to invest to improve their work experience. According to Cisco IBSG, the typical Cisco employee who chooses to use his or her own devices at work pays, on average, a $600 premium to do so.

Security and IT support are the top BYOD challenges: Respondents cited security/privacy and IT support for multiple mobile platforms as the top challenges of BYOD.

Device proliferation requires new policy, approach to control cost: According to Cisco IBSG analysis, only 14% of BYOD costs are hardware-related, highlighting the importance of choosing the right governance and support models to control these costs.

Key desktop virtualisation findings:

Companies recognise the value in desktop virtualisation: 98% of people surveyed were aware of desktop virtualisation. 68% of respondents agreed that a majority of knowledge worker roles are suitable for desktop virtualisation and 50% noted that their organisation is in the process of implementing a desktop virtualisation strategy.

Desktop virtualisation benefits three key areas: (1) business continuity so that workers can access applications through multiple locations and devices even if, for example, a server goes down, (2) employee productivity, and (3) IT costs.

Data protection is the number one concern: Ensuring that only the right people have access to sensitive company and customer data is a top priority.

Apple has announced that its North Carolina data centre will be powered entirely by renewable energy sources by the end of 2012.

Apple announced its environmentally friendly plans on its website, and revealed that its Maiden, North Carolina data centre will have 60 per cent of its power produced on site from renewable sources. The other 40 per cent will be purchased from local and regional renewable sources.

Greenpeace infiltrated Apple’s Cupertino campus this week, projecting messages from Twitter and Facebook users who are dismayed at Apple’s use of coal at the data centre that powers its iCloud sources.

“Apple’s announcement today is a great sign that Apple is taking seriously the hundreds of thousands of its customers who have asked for an iCloud powered by clean energy, not dirty coal. Apple’s doubling of its solar capacity and investment in local renewable energy are key steps to creating a cleaner iCloud,” said Greenpeace International Senior IT Analyst Gary Cook.

“Greenpeace will continue to campaign to push Apple – and other IT giants like Microsoft and Amazon – to clean the cloud until Apple has policies to ensure that as Apple’s North Carolina data centre and others continue to grow, they will grow using exclusively clean energy. To garuntee that, Apple must adopt a firm siting policy to prioritize renewable energy when it chooses locations for new data centres. Only then will customers have confidence that the iCloud will continue to get cleaner as it grows,” he added.

Apple is building the largest non-utility fuel cell installation in the US, and the nation’s largest private solar arrays, in order to provide the green energy, said the company.

Businessweek reports that CFO at Apple, Peter Oppenheimer, said in an interview: “We are leading the industry. All three of our data centres will be coal free, which is an industry first for anybody our size.”

Oppenheimer said that Apple’s plans have been in place since last year, and wouldn’t comment on whether the changes were made following Greenpeace’s recent protests.

In April 2011, Greenpeace slammed Apple’s Maiden data centre in its How Dirty is your Data report.

Recently, Greenpeace has protested across the globe. In April, the environmental organisation covered Apple’s Regent Street Store windows with its own poster to highlight Apple’s use of coal, and protested outside Apple’s Ireland HQ.

Organisations are viewing big data predominantly as a business prospect rather than an IT challenge and are moving fast to do something about it, according to a recent global survey by data integration software provider, Informatica Corporation.

It showed that nearly 70 per cent of organisations are now considering, planning or running big data projects – with 44 per cent now considering, 22 per cent planning, 13 per cent testing or 20 per cent running big data projects.

The survey report, Balancing Opportunity and Risk in Big Data, was drawn from poll of almost 600 IT and business professionals worldwide and assessed the state of big data projects and understanding of big data strategies.

In the survey, most respondents cited the management of growing transaction volumes (74 per cent) as the most relevant aspect of big data to their organisation. The company claimed that this statistic indicated significant challenges in the more traditional enterprise data realm.

However, other respondents picked newer technologies as well, with 46 per cent selecting technologies such as Hadoop and NoSQL for efficiently processing big data.

It also found that the management of big interaction data, including social media data (35 per cent), mobile device data (31 per cent) and machine-generated data (22 per cent), is rising in relevance.

“The reality is, big data represents both opportunities and challenges,” Informatica chief products officer, Girish Pancha, said.

According to the study, the lack of maturity in big data tools was the top challenge (52 per cent) that respondents face in big data projects, including a lack of support for reuse and metadata in current Hadoop environments.

The absence of support for real-time streaming data was another key challenge (39 per cent), followed by concerns over poor data quality (38 per cent), data security and privacy (38 per cent) and the limited availability of skilled developers to manage big data (35 per cent).

Other top concerns are overly difficult development for Hadoop (34 per cent), and lack of data governance capabilities (32 per cent).

So, what do organisations intend to get from their big data efforts?

Informatica said that 71 per cent of the respondents intend to improving efficiency in business operations by doing more things with more data. This is followed by increasing business agility (51 per cent).

Hybrid processors that include two or more types of core now account for half of the $111 billion processor market, driven by growth in smartphones and tablets, according to new [...]

Hybrid processors that include two or more types of core now account for half of the $111 billion processor market, driven by growth in smartphones and tablets, according to new research by IMS Research.

The most common type of hybrid processors combine a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphics processing unit (GPU). These processors are particularly suited to use in smartphones and tablets, which need to deliver high performance and HD graphics from within a compact form factor.

AMD and Intel have been developing hybrid processors to compete for PC market share since 2010, but a number of mobile processor vendors including NVidia, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments have also started offering heterogeneous application-specific processors with a microprocessor core and integrated GPU.

Now that smartphone sales exceed PCs, and tablets are gaining popularity, the demand for hybrid processors is growing. IMS Research has identified 20 processor vendors that provide heterogeneous processing solutions on a single chip, and values the market at over $55 billion.

According to Tom Hackenberg, semiconductors research manager at IMS Research and author of the Comprehensive Processor Report, the need for hybrid processors will only become more urgent as semiconductor providers reach the physical limits of Moore’s Law.

“This hybridisation is getting even more competitive with an Intel Atom-based smartphone on the market this month, demonstrating that Intel is serious about entering the mobile device market by combining an x86 microprocessor, graphics licensed from NVidia and configurable security logic as a hybrid processor triple play to capture share,” he said.

Hackenberg said that the extremely high volume of single chip microcontrollers (such as smart cards) means that hybrid solutions are unlikely to overtake single core solutions in volume any time soon. However, higher performance device demands will continue to push the market further toward hybrid processors.

Meanwhile, some chip vendors are turning their attention to configurable processors that can deliver application-specific cores. For example, Intel’s Z2460 mobile processor includes a configurable security engine, and Analog Devices’ BF60x DSP includes configurable logic to accelerate vision applications.

“If processor suppliers are going to continue meeting performance expectations set by Moore’s Law, clearly this is a necessary trend. Future processors may be less marketable by their top-end frequency and more by their application specific cores,” said Hackenberg.

Microsoft has had the bloatware accusation thrown at it countless times but now the company reportedly wants to make money turning back the tide of PC-slowing software with a little-known [...]

Microsoft has had the bloatware accusation thrown at it countless times but now the company reportedly wants to make money turning back the tide of PC-slowing software with a little-known service called ‘Signature’.

On offer for as long as a year but barely mentioned until now, Signature will be offered as a $99 (£62) service to users able to take their Windows computer to one of the company’s small clutch of US stores.

In return for this trek (or for buying a PC from it online in which case there is no charge), Microsoft techies will cleanse computers of bloatware and ‘nagware’ – “trialware and sample software” as Microsoft more politely calls it – often seen as a cause of user irritation and lower than expected PC performance.

Microsoft claims this could give laptops up to a 40 percent boost in startup speed, 51 percent in resume times and 23 percent in return-from-sleep responsiveness.

“Microsoft engineers have spent time carefully tuning your PC to help achieve maximum performance, as well as including software that makes it really fly,” claims the product marketing website.

The company said the service would also include the installation of Microsoft’s Security Essentials antivirus software, Office Starter Edition (with ads), Live Essentials, and Zune, which raises the immediate issue of what exactly constitutes ‘bloat’ in this context.

Security Essentials is a free security program that has been widely praised for its modest resource use compared to some branded rivals, but Zune and Office Starter Edition will be seen by others as the company planting unnecessary software on the users’ PCs.

Esteemed experts who’ve used the service report that the desktop and application set is stripped down from equivalents bought from other outfits, which adds up to improved performance.

Equally, however, the company has a reputation for adding plenty of hidden bloat of its own in recent years most notoriously with Windows Vista, an operating system so oversize the company has to invent Windows 7 as an excuse to strip out some of its NT-like excesses.

Linux users – who install the distribution and bundle from among many choices and then add only the software elements they really want – will laugh out loud at the idea of paying $99 to achieve the same with Windows.

In Techworld’s experience, popular desktop distributions of Linux (Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora) run happily on lower-specced machines than Windows, using far less memory and imposing less processor overhead in carrying out common tasks.

Nagging commercial programmes are unheard of and ‘bloat’ is at the user’s discretion.

Meanwhile, most users – even non-experts – could save money by removing Windows bloat themselves, although this does take time.

We should also repeat that the service is not charged for if the PC is bought direct from Microsoft, a sales channel not yet offered in the UK. This makes Signature a US-only service for now.

In future, Microsoft UK might ‘do an Apple’ and start offering consumer-friendly Windows installations as part of a drive to banish the worst excesses of the old Windows era.

Cynicism aside, the appearance of Signature could be another sign that the old Microsoft that fired huge operating systems at its users with little regard for what was actually being asked for, might be on the way out at last; if the PC buyer wants a clean desktop, he or she should get it.

The platform was originally launched on 1st July 2011 from NYSE Euronext’s US Liquidity Centre in New Jersey, which houses the New York Stock Exchange, but will now also operate from NYSE’s European Liquidity Centre in Basildon, UK.

NYSE Technologies has said that the platform is designed to increase business agility, simplify market access and reduce trading friction by tapping into the benefits of on-demand computing resources.

The platform will be delivered over NYSE’s Secure Financial Transactions Infrastructure network and provide customers from around the world access to the exchange’s regional markets in Europe and the US, all via the cloud.

NYSE partnered with EMC and VMware to implement the platform in the US and Europe.

Dominique Cerutti, president and deputy chief executive officer at NYSE Euronext, said that the Capital Markets Community Platform would allow customers to drive efficiencies at a “critical time”.

GF Futures’ Asian broker arm, based in Hong Kong, has been beta testing the platform.

“The global nature of the Community Platform, with its sophisticated and secure IT infrastructure, reflects the worldwide nature of the capital markets and provides choice and freedom for organisations like our own to operate and trade efficiently and competitively in a global marketplace,” said Dr Xiao Cheng, general manager of GF Futures.

Computerworld UK spoke to NYSE Euronext’s managing director of European colocation, Tariq Rashid, last month, who had hinted at the launch of the cloud platform. Rashid also explained how NYSE is heavily investing in broadening the scope of its European datacentre in Basildon, by adding additional exchanges and allowing smaller, more varied capital market firms to gain access.

“Originally many people saw colocation as the preserve of larger firms that were able to make a big investment in the required technology infrastructure, but now we have set up the space and have policies that allow smaller companies to take part,” said Rashid.

“We allow all capital market participants into colocation and allow them to start with smaller colocation footprints, such as half a rack, if that’s all they need,” he added.

Chinese regulatory authorities have approved Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility, paving the way for the deal to close within the week, company officials confirmed yesterday.

The companies announced last August that they had entered into an agreement for Google to acquire mobile phone and tablet maker Motorola Mobility for about US$12.5 billion.

“We are pleased that the deal has received approval in all jurisdictions,” Motorola spokeswoman Jennifer Erickson said Saturday. “We expect to close early next week.”

A Google spokeswoman confirmed the deal was approved early Saturday and that it should close within the week.

Motorola Mobility ships phones and tablets with Google’s Android operating system. The close of the deal means that Google has a hardware manufacturing arm with which it can closely work to develop Android.

Google will also have control of Motorola’s massive patent portfolio. Motorola Mobility has said that it owns or has applied for more than 24,000 patents.

The deal has already been approved by antitrust authorities in the U.S. and Europe. Chinese authorities have approved the deal on condition that Google keep Android free and available to other mobile device manufacturers for five years, according to a source close to the deal.

Other conditions include a commitment by Google to meet obligations to license patents for industry standard technology on FRAND (fair, reasonable, and non-discriminator) terms, according to the source. FRAND terms typically involve licensing obligations required by standards-setting bodies for members that get involved in the standard-setting process, and for companies whose technology is approved as part of industry standards.

The conditions set by the Chinese are similar to those involved in the approval process in Europe and the U.S., according to the source.

Motorola Mobility’s manufacturing might and vast array of patents will be crucial in Google’s battle for dominance in the smartphone and tablet market as it competes with Apple. Google will also compete with Microsoft as Microsoft promotes new versions of Windows in the tablet and smartphone market.

An open question is whether mobile device manufacturers thatcurrently use Android will see Google as a competitor, and possibly be drawn to the Microsoft camp.

This probably isn’t how Facebook envisioned its initial public offering would roll out.

The first hours of the social networking company’s IPO got off to a shaky start on Friday with the share price wavering around the $40 mark, never gaining the astronomical momentum that had been anticipated by many. Shortly after 2 p.m. ET, the stock price was hovering just under $41, less than $3 above its initial share price.

“It’s certainly not flying to unprecedented levels. This underscores the thesis that many investors are taking a wait-and-see approach,” said Zeus Kerravala, an analyst with ZK Research.

He added that while many people may be surprised Facebook’s stock price hasn’t taken off yet, they really shouldn’t be.

“I think it’s surprising a lot of people, but I think it should have been expected. There are a lot of questions about Facebook…. How are they going to monetise mobile? Can [CEO Mark] Zuckerberg run a public company?” said Kerravala.

Twenty-eight year-old Zuckerberg started the day by ringing the Nasdaq opening bell from company headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif.

After that, though, there were a few hitches.

Trading was supposed to start at 11 a.m. ET, but the Nasdaq delayed it by about half an hour in order to handle the flood of buy and sell orders that were coming through for Facebook’s stock.

Once trading actually began, the stock started out strong, trading at $42 per share, $4 above the official offering price of $38 the company set Thursday.

However, instead of rising from there, Facebook’s share price began to fizzle, and dropped to below $39 just 20 minutes after trading began. Once the price hit $38, about 10 to 15 minutes later, the company’s underwriters stepped in to bolster it and hold the price floor at $38, reported the Wall Street Journal.

TV commentators and online headlines began using words like “underperform” and “disappointing.”

Ezra Gottheil, an analyst with Technology Business Research, said people may be jumping the gun. He contends that Facebook’s stock price is hovering around where it started this morning because it was priced appropriately.

“I can say that if your IPO doesn’t go up or down very much, then you priced it right. At this point, it’s all about perception and expectation. The stock price is just a noise meter,” he added.

Regardless of the ups and downs the stock is going through today, there’s been a huge amount of interest and excitement around the event.

As trading began, people were standing around Times Square in New York City, staring up at giant screens showing Facebook’s stock numbers. At the same time, Twitter momentarily staggered under the crush of tweets about the IPO.

As noteworthy as this day has been for many in the financial and tech industry, it’s been a tough day for other social networking companies.

The Wall Street Journal reported soon after trading of Facebook’s stock began that LinkedIn’s stock price was down 2.6% and Groupon was down 6%. Pandora also was down, dropping 5%.

Zynga, though, might have fared the worst. The online gaming company’s share price toppled a full 13%, landing at $7.17, according to MarketWatch . Trading on that stock was halted, later reinstated, then halted for a second time.

The last time Hewlett-Packard Co. announced a layoff of 25,000 people, it was on the same day that Lehman Brothers collapsed and the stock market nose-dived. That was in September 2008.

Now, HP is reportedly considering another layoff of equal number – and possibly as many as 30,000 – according to a report by Bloomberg.

The timing of HP’s big 2008 announcement was coincidental, and not unexpected because it followed the acquisition of EDS. But it nonetheless was the first big layoff in a tech industry that was retrenching. The industry eventually lost more than 250,000 IT jobs as the recession deepened.
An HP spokesman declined to comment on the latest layoff plan, calling it speculation.

For IT employment generally, what will matter is where HP cuts its labor force. It employs about 350,000 worldwide, but does not report on the exact number of people who work for it in the U.S.

Analysts say that some cutbacks were expected following HP’s recent announcement that it plans to combine its personal systems and printer divisions.
Frank Gillett, an analyst at Forrester, said he didn’t think that the reorganization would result in 25,000 layoffs.

HP CEO Meg Whitman has faulted prior decisions to cut R&D, and Gillett believes the company may be trying to find efficiencies elsewhere to increase R&D investment. “I don’t think there is a company-wide contraction going on,” said Gillett.

Charles King, an analyst at Pund-IT, also sees the printer and PC division as a major reason for any cut. The personal system division, which is responsible for PCs, is the company’s lowest margin business “and margins have been falling pretty dramatically,” he said.

King said the reported layoffs are “lousy news for a whole lot of people, especially when the economy doesn’t have 25,000 jobs to be given up right now.”

Whitman has signaled the need for cost cutting at HP. In a critique of operations earlier this year, she said the company was “too complex and too slow,” and she said that there was “still much more that we can do to streamline operations.”

Chip maker Intel today announced the launch of its third generation Intel Core vPro processors, codenamed Ivy Bridge, designed for use in business laptops, desktops and “intelligent systems”.

Like the Ivy Bridge Core i-series processors launched last month, the Core vPro processors are based on Intel’s 22nm microarchitecture and, when paired with Intel’s Q-series chipsets, offer a 10-20 percent improvement in performance. They also feature better graphics and faster response time, thanks to Intel’s Smart Response, Rapid Start and Smart Connect technologies.

However, the Core vPro processors go a step further by embedding security into the silicon, providing hardware-level protection for e-banking, e-commerce, virtual private networks and other secure transactions.

Intel’s identity protection technology (IPT) defends against identity theft by using a one-time password and embedded public-key infrastructure from Symantec. This enables businesses, governments or websites to check that a legitimate user is logging in from a trusted PC, and create a non-spoofable path for user input and display output.

The Core vPro processors also enable endpoint security management from McAfee which, together with Intel’s Active Management Technology (AMT) 8.0, allows IT professionals to remotely manage PCs that are powered off or disabled, as well as remotely fix compromised PCs and apply security patches.

Intel said that large-scale retailers can save millions of dollars in service calls with the ability to remotely manage systems using AMT, and industrial computing systems can achieve greater efficiencies by consolidating multiple automation functions onto one platform.

All Ivy Bridge processors also include Secure Key (for secure encryption) and OS Guard (to defends against attacks). Intel has teamed up with Accenture to provide 24/7 computer diagnostics and repair services to enterprise clients using ARROW (Accenture Remote Resolution Online Workforce solution).

The new chips are intended for use in ultrabooks, laptops, desktops, workstations and all-in-one PCs, as well as “intelligent systems” in retail, healthcare and manufacturing. These include medical diagnostic equipment, digital advertising signs and high definition video conferencing systems, which can make use of the Core vPro’s compute performance and graphics capabilities to quickly process digital images.

Meanwhile, Lenovo and HP have both unveiled enterprise-class ultrabooks running on third-generation Intel Core vPro processors. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Ultrabook and the HP EliteBook Folio 9470m both have 14-inch screens, weigh less than two kilograms and are roughly 19mm thick.

“Thinner and lighter devices are not just nice to look at, there are a necessity to get the job done anywhere, at any time,” said Rick Echevarria, vice president of the Intel Architecture Group. “These machines are built for business and engineered for security while delivering no-compromise user-centric experience.”

The performance improvements also provide the processing power needed to handle big data sets and manipulate them faster. Echevarria said we are now at a point where big data applications are “finding their way from the data centre to the end point,” adding that big data has become a “top tier concern for businesses”.

Echevarria said that Intel was working with its OEMs to make vPro available at mainstream price points for desktop systems, but added that the processor family was growing aggressively in its current segment, which is currently in systems that cost $850 (£530) and above.

Juniper Networks is negotiating a deal with Radware to license application delivery controller technology from the company, according to investment firm Oppenheimer & Co.

In a bulletin issued this week, Oppenheimer stated that Juniper would use the Radware ADC technology to integrate it with its QFabric data centre switch architecture. Oppenheimer said it believed the deal to be worth $70 million to $100 million over three to five years.

“We believe Juniper has been looking for some time to build an eco-system around its data centre architecture, the QFabric, and Radware would offer a key building block with its ADC engine,” stated Oppenheimer analyst Ittai Kidron in his bulletin.

A request for comment from Juniper was not returned by posting time. Radware declined to comment.

Specific details of the possible arrangement are still limited, according to Oppenheimer, which stated that the companies are “in advanced negotiations.”

Juniper and Radware announced a relationship late last year to sell Radware’s ADC products with Juniper MX routers to service providers. Juniper is choosing to license the technology instead of OEMing it because the company wanted “full control” over it and to tune it specifically to QFabric, Kidron stated.

Radware, meanwhile, has limited access to the high-end of the market so the potential conflict from overlap would be minimal, he stated.

Kidron states that he believes Juniper was also negotiating with Riverbed for a licensing transaction of Riverbed’s recently acquired Zeus ADC technology.

“We suspect Juniper’s familiarity with Radware’s technology following their OEM announcement in 4Q11 gave Radware an edge,” he stated.

Separately, Juniper said its Junosphere cloud-based development environment now has 500 customers and some new enhancements. It includes a new graphical user interface based on Junos Space, giving customers the ability to directly control their accounts and resources, including adding users, defining privileges and making reservations.

It also now has 50% more cloud capacity, allowing more concurrent users and larger network topologies, Juniper said. Junosphere can also now accept credit card payments for blocks of time and access to virtual machines.

The vaunted Google search engine is set for an upgrade that will make it easier for users to find the information they need by putting their searches in context, the company said yesterday.

Over the next few days, users should begin to see an extra column appear on their Google search results pages. The new column, dubbed Knowledge Graph, is designed so that the engine can dig deeper to fulfill search requests by asking users to be more specific about what they’re searching for.

For example, if a user searches for the word “patriots,” the new feature will ask if they are interested in information about the New England Patriots football team, participants in the American Revolution or the Patriots Theater in New Jersey.

Once the user lists a specific subject, the irrelevant results disappear.

“This is a critical first step towards building the next generation of search, which taps into the collective intelligence of the Web and understands the world a bit more like people do,” wrote Amit Singhal, Google’s senior vice president of engineering.

“We’re proud of our first baby step — the Knowledge Graph — which will enable us to make search more intelligent, moving us closer to the ‘Star Trek computer’ that I’ve always dreamt of building,” Singhal added.

Knowledge Graph to U.S. users of PCs, smartphones and tablets, he said.

Google announced its new Knowledge Graph slightly less than a week after Microsoft upgraded its Bing search engine.

Microsoft tweaked Bing to make its search engine more social by letting it include user comments, likes and activities posted in popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

A new Bing interface, which moves from a private to public beta in the U.S. today, offers users a sidebar with the opinions and search queries of friends in the user’s social networks.

“Google is working hard to keep their search on top. That’s the way it is for all market leaders — like Apple and Facebook. There’s always someone nipping at your heels. The key is not to assume you’ll stay on top,” said Zeus Kerravala, an analyst with ZK Research.

He added that it won’t be clear how helpful the new search feature is until users and analysts get their hands on it and give it a try.

“This has potential if it leads to better, more accurate searches, but if it’s just noise, then it will annoy people,” said Kerravala.

SAP seems to be betting its future on its HANA in-memory database, spotlighting the technology once again at the Sapphire conference in Orlando yesterday, announcing a slew of new applications, [...]

SAP seems to be betting its future on its HANA in-memory database, spotlighting the technology once again at the Sapphire conference in Orlando yesterday, announcing a slew of new applications, partnerships and functional enhancements for the system.

Thanks to a “shopping spree” by SAP in recent years, the company has been able to surround HANA with a wide variety of important supporting tools, co-founder Hasso Platter said during a keynote address Wednesday, which was webcast.

“We have enriched the system. We think that technically, we have a pretty complete collection of functionality,” Platto said.

SAP, which has also been releasing a series of specialised HANA-based applications, announced eight new ones on Wednesday, targeting areas such as sales pipeline analysis, planning and consolidation, cash forecasting, and deposit management. It wasn’t immediately clear when the applications would be generally available.

In addition Wednesday, SAP sought to align HANA with the industry buzzword “big data,” which refers to the huge volumes of unstructured information being generatd by social media, sensors and other sources, as well as related efforts to draw valuable business insights from it.

SAP announced that the fourth service pack for HANA is now generally available and includes an integration with Hadoop, the increasingly popular open-source framework for large-scale data processing. This tie-in will provide the ability to read and from and write to the Hadoop Distributed File System and fast batch updating to HANA as well as the Sybase IQ analytic database, SAP said.

SAP has also formed a “partner council” around HANA, with the centrepiece being an agreement with Cloudera, which provides Hadoop services as well as its own distribution of Hadoop.

Riding the big data theme, SAP was also especially keen on Wednesday to prove that HANA can be scaled out to colossal heights.

The company demonstrated a 100-node HANA cluster, built with IBM hardware, that had 100TB of RAM, 4,000 Intel CPU cores and 150TB of solid-state disk memory.

The system, which cost US$4 million for the hardware, “is the world’s largest in-memory database system assembled ever,” SAP executive board member and technology chief Vishal Sikka said in an interview before the conference.

It is capable of running 1,000 applications for “millions” of users, or can simply take a single database query and run it at warp speed, Sikka said. “This nonsense about scalability, we’ll shoot it in the head.”

“We’re testing the limits of how far we can go,” Sikka added, during a keynote talk on Wednesday at Sapphire.

Customers will be invited to upload their data to the massive cluster and run jobs, although their activities will be limited to experiments, not production deployments at this time, Sikka said in the interview.

Finally, SAP announced the availability of HANA developer instances on Amazon Web Services IaaS (infrastructure as a service) platform, which is a crucial step in helping generate interest among the programming community’s grassroots.

HANA takes about a 20 percent performance hit on AWS because the service’s virtualisation layer inhibits HANA from interacting closely with the CPUs, as it does with traditional appliances, according to Sikka.

Customers can expect HANA to show up on other cloud infrastructure platforms over time, according to Sikka.

HANA emerged as a commercial product last year after a long gestation in SAP’s labs, with the DNA of previously released technologies. Available in appliance form from a variety of hardware vendors, HANA places data into RAM for processing, instead of reading it continuously off a disk or other storage medium, providing a performance boost that SAP has claimed is nothing short of remarkable. Actions performed in RAM are committed to physical storage on an ongoing basis to ensure database recovery in the event of a hardware failure.

SAP first held up HANA as a way to highly accelerate the speed of analytical processing jobs but has since also pivoted it toward the transactional workloads of the ERP (enterprise resource planning) software the company is best known for, with an eye on eventually stealing the supporting roles now commonly held by Oracle’s database and IBM’s DB2 in its customers’ IT landscapes.

More engineering work remains to be done before HANA is ready to handle SAP’s flagship Business Suite, although the company claims early support will be ready this year. In the meantime, SAP’s Sybase division is positioning the Adaptive Server Enterprise database as a potential Oracle replacement now, with HANA coming later.

HANA delivered €160 million in software license revenue for SAP in its first six months of availability, a sum both the company and market observers have deemed significant given the product’s newness. This year has seen SAP leadership grow increasingly sensitive to any suggestion that HANA isn’t yet to be taken seriously as a viable database platform, particularly by rival Oracle. That vendor sells the Exadata and Exalytics appliances, which are HANA competitors.

Worldwide mobile phone sales dropped by two percent in the quarter ending in March compared to the same period in 2011, which is the first time there has been a sales decline in the market since 2009, according to Gartner.

According to the technology research company, 419.1 million mobile phones were sold in the world during the calendar quarter ending in March.

The slip was largely due to a sales slowdown in the Far East, explained Anshul Gupta, a principal research analyst at Gartner in the United Kingdom.

“The first quarter, traditionally the strongest quarter for Asia—which is driven by Chinese New Year, saw a lack of new product launches from leading manufacturers, and users delayed upgrades in the hope of better smartphone deals arriving later in the year,” he said in a statement.

For consumers, especially those buying off-brand phones, the sales slump could be good news. That’s because so-called “white box” phone makers were unable to adjust their production runs during the quarter, resulting in inventory backlogs. “Gartner expects some of this volume to be sold during the next couple of quarters, because the channel is likely to lower the prices to dispose of the stock,” the research firm predicted.

While Gartner expects sales to pick up as the year progresses, it’s shaving 20 million units off its sales projections for the year, according to another of the firm’s analysts, Annette Zimmermann.

Developments Gartner expects to perk up sales later in the year include the continued rollout of 3G phones by local and regional manufacturers in China and introduction of handsets in the West based on new versions of Android and Windows, as well as the anticipated introduction of a new iPhone model from Apple.

Samsung was a clear winner during the quarter, Gartner noted. It knocked Nokia off the top spot it has held in the market since 1998, selling 86.6 million handsets and snatching 20.7 percent of the global market. It also regained the title of the world’s number one smartphone maker from Apple, with sales of 38 million units. What’s more, it became the number one maker of Android smartphones, selling 40 percent of the handsets for that platform. No other maker has more than 10 percent of that market, Gartner noted.

During the period, Samsung’s and Apple’s grip on the smartphone market continued to rise, the research firm said. Together, the pair owned 49.3 percent of the market, compared to 29.3 percent during the same period a year ago.

Gartner also reported that the market share of worldwide smartphone sales held by phones based on Google’s Android operating system increased dramatically over the previous year, to 56.1 percent from 36.4 percent.

The smartphone market has become highly commoditised and differentiation is becoming a challenge for manufacturers, Gartner said. “This is particularly true for smartphones based on the Android OS, where a strong commoditisation trend is at work and most players are finding it hard to break the mould,” added Gupta.

Facebook’s initial public offering may be getting even bigger.

Reports circulated Tuesday that the social network is working to increase the size of its IPO by 85 million shares, according to an MSNBC report and others. Such an increase in the number of shares that will be available to potential investors means the company could raise up to $18.5 billion in its initial public offering.

This plan for the 25% increase in shares is expected to be filed in documents with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission today. The company now is expected to offer more than 421 million shares.

Facebook’s market debut is expected Friday.

The news comes on the heels of Facebook’s raising the price range of its stock shares Tuesday.

The social network filed an amendment to its IPO registration with the SEC that increased its estimated stock price between $34 and $38 per share. That’s up from the original range of $29 to $34 per share.

The new price range could boost Facebook’s valuation to more than $100 billion.

The company was expected to close the books on its IPO on Tuesday and then officially set its stock price Thursday.

Facebook is pushing forward, increasing its stock price and the number of shares that will be available, despite strikes against its public image in the past week.

A survey released Tuesday found that half of Americans think Facebook is a passing fad. Three out of every five Facebook users say they have little or no faith that the social network will keep their personal information private, the survey found.

In another development Tuesday, General Motors, believed to be the country’s third-largest advertiser, pulled a $10 million advertising deal from Facebook, concluding that its paid ads on the social network weren’t helping the auto maker sell more products.

That’s tough timing for Facebook executives, who have been touring the country in an IPO roadshow pitching the company as a great investment. A major part of its strategy has been based on the strength of the company’s advertising business.

Rob Enderle, an analyst with the Enderle Group, said GM’s pullout, days before the IPO debut, was a blow to Facebook and could prompt serious, old-school investors to rethink whether to buy Facebook’s stock.

“The GM thing alone looked like some [Facebook] executive ticked GM off and they punitively worked to torpedo the IPO,” said Enderle. “Their announcement basically says Facebook’s revenue is based on a false premise that advertising is actually worth something on the service.”
